Text Box: The tonsils are lymphoid tissues on either side of the throat. Most
commonly, the term "tonsils" refers to those that can be seen in the
back of the throat. Their purpose is to trap bacteria or viruses that
enter the body through the throat. An infection of the tonsils is
called tonsillitis.

Common problems with the tonsils are recurrent infections or
enlargement that cause breathing or swallowing problems.
Symptoms include a sore throat, fever, and swollen glands in
the neck.

The first line of treatment for tonsillitus is the use of antibiotics.
If the condition is persistent or repetitive, surgical removal of the
tonsils and/or adenoids may be necessary.

Called a tonsillectomy, this procedure is done in about 20 minutes under general anesthesia in an operating room. The patient is usually sent home after a recovery period of anywhere from 2-4 hours. Occasionally, an overnight stay at a hospital is necessary.

If you suspect that your child is suffering from recurrent tonsillitis, call our office to schedule an appointment. We will discuss the history of sore throat and/or breathing problems, and define the appropriate treatment.
